I think all forms of training should be used, but I think the most effective and most important is hands-on training. This is where the employee gets hands-on experience and can learn through trial and error. In my current job, we have had a long training process, as there are many individual things that go into our jobs and can change given the time of year. In the beginning, we did instructor-led training. For many and most others, this can be tedious and you can easily zone out in these sessions, especially in a work-from-home environment. It wasn't until I got to physically click around and do the work that I was able to fully understand the steps of my work. The repetition helps me to memorize all of the steps needed to complete different tasks. This is where you can try out things with the supervision of your trainer. They can help to push you in the right direction until you are ready to fly solo. This is how my current training is going, as the training for my position typically lasts the entire first year on the job. Also, as I am doing things hands-on, I can take my own notes and make them as detailed as I need, so that I can refer back to them to double-check my work.

I believe that on-the-job training is the best form of training for any employee. This allows an employee to learn exactly what is expected from them and how they are expected to do the job. There are many ways that on-the-job training can be accomplished including coaching or mentoring, job rotation, and special assignments. All of these forms can make it easier for a new employee when they start with a company and can help existing employees move within the company. The company work for has job rotation opportunities as well as what they call the GROW program. The GROW program is typically supervisors and above but can also include those who are trying to move into supervisor positions. These individuals are given projects in a different department and are coached by one or more managers that are area subject experts.
