Knowing the overall goal of a business message means that you know what points you are trying to get across to your audience. The goal of messages may be to persuade or maybe even to inform, but knowing beforehand will allow the writer of the message to cater to that one specific goal. Whether it be a formal or informal business message, keeping in mind the purpose for the message will give the author of the message the tools they need for the message to be effective.
One thing that I have learned to do in the last several weeks while writing business messages at work, is to put my cell phone in my desk drawer and avoid any incoming calls to my desk which is something that is mentioned in the chapter 6 video. By doing this, I am able to compose my message without interruption and am able to cut down on revising the messages because my attention was not interrupted.

These videos may have been pretty quick and length but they packed a punch with the amount of information they carried and useful information at that. From the chapter 5 video I got that before even thinking about writing a business message you should have a goal in what you want to get out of it. This can not only help you in crafting a more meaningful message, but can help you outside of the business as well. Something else I learned from these videos is to have an outline when writing your message. When you have a purpose or goal for your message an outline should be quick and easy, while making your message flow better and be more concise. The outline doesn't have to be something really crazy, rather just a little plan for your writing to make sure all your points get across. Something i'm going to change in my communication practices is that I'm going to start any writing or message that I'm sending or turning with a simple outline. Whether I write it down on a piece of scratch paper or type it off to the side of the document where I can delete it later. This will also help me make sure I'm not sending anything that's not necessary to the document or putting something bad onto the internet where it stays forever.
