Good managers realize that individuals solve problems and make decisions in different ways. One approach to understanding problem-solving styles came from psychologist Carl Jung, who believed these differences resulted from how we gather and evaluate information. Jung said people gather information either by sensation or intuition. Sensation people work with facts and hard data and prefer routine and order. Intuitive people examine possibilities and prefer solving new problems and using abstract concepts. People evaluate information by the extremes thinking or feeling. Thinking judgments come from impersonal analysis, reason, and logic. Feeling judgments come from seeking harmony and approval. Two other paired personality opposites are introversion-extroversion and judging-perceiving. Introverts focus on personal thoughts and feelings, whereas extroverts like being around others. For judging versus perceiving, people with a judging preference favor certainty, closure, and data-driven decisions. Perceiving people enjoy ambiguity, dislike deadlines, and enjoy a lot of data. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) uses Jung's research to measure how people differ on four pairs of personality opposites. The various combinations of these preferences result in sixteen unique personality types. The two preferences that are most strongly associated with effective management are thinking and judging, but studies make clear that different individuals thrive in different situations.
