Unit 3 Argumentative Essay Assignment Guidelines Assignment In this unit, you are invited to choose a subculture that you are interested in and to investigate it more deeply. You will take stock of your existing ideas about that subculture, conduct a search for resources, read and analyze those resources, and work through the evolution of your own thinking on this topic. By the end of that research-writing process, you may still be focused on the specific subculture you started with, but it's just as possible your topic may have shifted. However your ideas have grown, deepened, changed, or stayed the same is fine. By the end of this Unit (Module 11), you will create a 6-8-page Researched Argument Essay. Your thesis statement must make a claim that can be argued, and you must offer evidence from 5 of the sources you will have found in your research. You must create an argument of evaluation OR a proposal argument. Argue a thesis statement/position that you have developed during your research process as EITHER an argument of evaluation OR a proposal argument. Evaluation Argument If you choose to write an argument of evaluation, you're showing the quality of something. For example, say you choose electric vehicle owners for your subculture. Thus, you might choose drivers with internal combustion engines as your Audience. Then you might choose a Behavior Change, like getting them to understand the advantages and disadvantages of owning an all-electric vehicle. Your thesis statement/position could be something like, "Despite having some downsides. overall, electric vehicles are good options to help decrease dependence on fossil fuels.\" Proposal Argument If you choose to write a proposal argument, you're making the case that something should be done or avoided/stopped. For example, say you choose electric vehicle owners for your subculture. Thus, you might choose drivers with internal combustion engines as your Audience. Then you might choose a Behavior Change, like getting them to buy an all-electric vehicle for their next purchase. Your thesis statement/position could be something like, "Especially as they are becoming less expensive, new car buyers should choose all-electric vehicles." There isn''t an essay prompt here that lays out what your essay will be about. Your topic and research will lead you on a highly individualized path. There are some basic guidelines for the structure of these arguments, however: Evaluation Arguments Introduction Provide background information/context for the topic and establish its importance. State your evaluative claim(thesis). The thesis should reflect the evaluative criteria used to justify your argument. Body Paragraphs Describe each criterion and provide support for your judgment. Supporting details will consist of the following: o Examples/Testimonials o Documented evidence Address potential opposing views. Conclusion Reinforce the most powerful support for your claim and move your audience toward your position
