EXAMPLE:

Internet Usage The Internet has become an important and popular tool in modern-day society, and can be used for entertainment, education, as well as personal communication (Brignall & Van Valey, 2005). Recent studies conducted for the purpose of determining the effects of Internet usage on CULTIVATION THEORY: INTERNET USAGE AND COLLEGE STUDENTS 3 behavioral patterns such as political and civic engagement and the Internet's effect on health care show the Internet's ability to influence people. More specifically, the Internet can have a significant impact on interpersonal interaction and a person's well-being (Gross et al., 2007; Kraut et al., 1998). However, the Internet may not be a completely positive medium for people to use. For instance, Emanuel et al. (2008) suggest that college students spend as much time listening to media, increasingly, the Internet, as they do personally interacting with one another. Other studies have suggested that Internet usage actually has a negative impact on social interaction. As people use the Internet more, they kept up with fewer friends, spent less time talking with their families, experienced more daily life stressors and felt more lonely and depressed (Kraut et al., 1998). When people increase the amount of Internet usage they can n addiction. College students tend to be heavy consumers of media, and are at risk for developing a media addiction (Larose et al., 2003). The researchers also found that media addictions are a type of behavioral addiction in which there is no external chemical substance involved. By this definition, addicted media consumers feel compelled to consume media despite potentially negative consequences that make continued use appear irrational or out of control, even in their own eyes. Because of these negative effects of Internet usage on personal interaction, it is important to investigate the influence that the Internet has on a person's perception about reality
