You are contracted as an expert risk communicator by the School Board of a large South Florida School District to communicate the alleged risks of adverse health outcomes associated with occupancy of an elementary school building. The main concern by occupants is of an unusually high number of medically-diagnosed cancer cases among women who have historically occupied a rather localized area of the school facility. As part of the initial information-gathering process you learn that there have been twelve (12) reported cases of breast cancer from eleven (11) women, all who have worked as school teachers within one hallway of the first floor of one campus building over the course of many years. Remarkably, two (2) cases were diagnosed in individuals who had worked in the very same classroom. The twelfth cancer case was diagnosed in a woman who worked in the cafeteria within the immediately adjacent, but physically separated, building. The cancers were reportedly diagnosed over a ten (10) year period or so. Given this information, detail what you would do, again, as the hired expert risk communicator, to effectively communicate the alleged risk. The following are suggestions which you might consider to help you formulate a strategy:
1. What would be the first step you take in evaluating this situation?
2. Does the number of cases diagnosed raise suspicion that the cancers resulted from occupancy of the building(s)?
3. Is the information provided above sufficient to cause you to suspect that occupancy of the buildings by the teachers might have resulted in environmental exposures associated with development of the cancers?
4. Do you feel it necessary, particularly if teachers currently working in the buildings insist, to sample the indoor air of the buildings for molds, radon, volatile organic compounds, and/or other agents?
5. Do you feel it necessary, particularly if teachers currently working in the buildings insist, to sample the water servicing and soil surrounding the buildings?
6.Would you seek the assistance of other professionals of other disciplines, be they from academia, government, or other private/public organizations, to help you with your task of risk communication?
NOTE: Your document must be typewritten, no more than double-spaced, at least eight (8) pages in length, free of typographical errors, and address the concepts presented by Chapters 1 20 of the course textbook. Any references used must be properly listed, within the body of the text and in a reference list, in accordance with APA-guidelines.
