A request for a quote (RFQ) is an inquiry that a company can send to a supplier to commence a transaction between the two. An example of when an RFQ is used is when a company is purchasing a common good they know of and need like a hospital purchasing a fixed amount of stitches for their inventory. This document's main purpose is to fully quantify data and factors to close a sale. A request for proposal (RFP) is a document sent to suppliers inorder to inticulate more about them to understand if ordering from them is more beneficial compared to other suppliers. An example of an RFP is when a manufacturing plant is trying to find the best third-party logistics providers by comparing RFPs.

A Time when you would issue an RFQ rather than an RFP is when you are not only determined to purchase a particular product and not a service but you already understand and are fully aware of the supplier's prices and qualities, making the transaction process less tedious and more simple.
