Question:
Hospitals of the East ("East"), a large teaching and research hospital, has reached an agreement to acquire Hospital West ("West"), a nearby teaching and research hospital. The hospitals provide many similar services and also have differing specialties. Likewise, because of their geographical proximity, they serve patients in both communities.
You are on the integration team at East. The CEO of East, Dr. Marguerite Jones, has advised the team that a top priority for both hospitals is to maximize the benefits of synergies made possible by the merger.
Given your experience as a participant in integration teams for earlier acquisitions by East, Dr. Jones has asked you to take the lead in developing East's Communication Plan for the merger.
As an initial step, outline the Communication Plan for the Integration Team, focusing on the many stakeholders who will be impacted by the merger, including the following:
- Doctors
- Nurses
- Patients
- Hospital administrators
- Research leaders
- Hospital technicians
- Facilities management
- Vendors and other third parties
- Regulators
- Local communities
Assignment
Select any two of the stakeholder groups. For each of the two groups include each of the Communication Plan elements:
- Who
- What
- When
- How
- Format
In preparing the detailed outline, the following may be particularly helpful:
- Communication is "the processes required to ensure timely and appropriate generation, collection, dissemination, storage, and ultimate disposition of project information."
- Communication is an important cause of project success or failure.
- A Communication Plan is critical for project managers.
- The plan should list who, what, when, and how information should be communicated.
- Change is hard. To be successful, use the PCT Model and/or follow the ADKAR Model (Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, Reinforcement)
