Intolerance and overtolerance, this is the story of a Haitian immigrant.This patient was suffering from terminal cancer with extreme pain. This patient gave consent to be treated. The patient's brothers conducted a prayer vigil for their dying brother, their complaint was the brother was delirious under the and mumbled incoherently under influence of heavy dose of pain medication. The brothers believed this was evil spirits entering the patient's body. According to voodoo religion, unless the spirit was exorcised it would stay with the family forever. The brothers asked the nurse not to give any more pain medication. This is a tough call I believe under the care of a physician and informed consent of the patient the brothers have no say. I do believe religion should always be considered. I also know that patients change their minds about certain beliefs when hard decisions have to be made.
