Hypothetical Situation: write an email asking me for a letter of recommendation for a graduate program you may be interested in or a job you would consider applying for after you graduate.
When I am writing a recommendation letter I always ask students for:
- The name the letter should be addressed to
- A link to the program/job you are applying to so I can read about the qualities they look for in students
- Any specifics about the program/job and why your academic background or strengths align
- A copy of your resume (I recommend an attached PDF)
- Qualities you would like me to include or emphasize
- Time line for submission and how it should be transmitted (email, mailed, etc)
Resume (will not be graded but I will provide feedback):
- Education section at the top
- One page
- Active or success verbs for each bullet point under Experience
- Consistent formatting
- Edited for spelling and grammar errors
Also consider the 4 F's:
- Format: is the document organized to prioritize the reader
- Filling: clear purpose and necessary information
- Feeling: polite, respectful request
- Filth: proofread to correct any errors
