Cultural values are what make diverse cultures unique. They are a series of principles and values that are passed down generation after generation by our ancestors. There are many differences in cultures around the world, some of which can prove difficult for international management. One of the biggest differences is communication. This goes so far beyond just speaking the same language. Non-verbal communication is important as well. In some countries a nod, how you shake hands, and the way you sit in a chair can mean different things. Time is viewed differently in different countries as well. In our textbook and our chapter 5 PowerPoint there are many different examples of how different culture's view time. In Arabic countries, they believe that they do not have control over time, so it is not as important. In China it is important to be punctual but meetings, etc may move slower than normal. In Japan it is important to be obedient to superiors and for employees to stay with one company until retirement, although research shows that seems to be changing. There are still cultures that value men above women and women have little to no chance of leading companies. Similarities in international management across cultures seem to boil down to leadership type. Many cultures value a leader who is direct and to the point. This type of leader is able to tell subordinates exactly what needs to be done and how to do it. The diplomatic leaders who are very careful about communication, are careful not to come across as harsh or uncaring. It is important to remember that culture can affect all parts of international management
