The textbook outlines several planning tools and techniques, including forecasting, contingency planning, scenario planning, benchmarking, and staff planning. The act of forecasting involves making predictions about the future. Contingency planning involves identifying backup plans to use when things don't go according to plan. Scenario planning involves identifying various potential future situations and creating plans for each one. Benchmarking involves comparing both internal and external factors in order to plan for improvements in the future. Staff planners are professionals who specialize in the entire planning process, as well as the tools and techniques used in planning. This part of the textbook covers five steps for planning. In the military, there is a process called the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) which has seven steps. These steps include Receipt of Mission, Mission Analysis, Course of Action (COA) Development, COA Analysis, COA Comparison, COA Approval, and Issue the Order. This process follows the same essential guidelines where Courses of Action are contingency and scenario planning combined. To assist with forecasting, we use the Intelligence Warfighting Function to assess the enemy's actions and plan accordingly. By benchmarking, we can develop our plan based on what we predict will happen. My wife and I also engage in contingency and scenario planning, especially for our financial future. While forecasting is useful, we find it necessary to plan for several scenarios with a few contingency plans included.
