I need help responding to this classmate, Must be 150 words or more

"Hello class, I hope you all doing well. So, after reading chapter 13, and doing some research on my own, here are some thoughts and definitions I found.

  • Withdrawal is described in the textbook as, an approach to handling conflict in which one of the parties removes him/herself from the situation to avoid the conflict. (p. 494) This would be the equivalent to Joe Hunter resigning his job or breaking up with his girlfriend to please the captain.
  • Accommodation is described in the textbook as, The conflict style of a person who tends to respond to conflict by giving in to the other person. (p. 494) This is a very common approach. Basically, the affected part just takes the unfair treatment as given and hopes that with time the conflict we resolve itself.
  • Win at all costs is described in the textbook as, an approach to handling conflict in which one side seeks to win regardless of the damage to the other side. (p. 494) Obviously, the captains action reflects such an approach. This style can be highly disruptive because as the conflict scales, it makes backing down to resolve a conflict very difficult.
  • Collaboration is described in the textbook as, The conflict style of a person who wants a conflict resolved in such a way that both sides get what they want. (p. 494) This would be the perfect solution here, but since the conflict arises from personal issues, I do not see how all parts could get what they want.
  • Third-party intervention is defined in the textbook as, When a neutral party is asked to help resolve a conflict. (p. 494) This would be the equivalent as Joe Hunter taking this issue up to his captain supervisor, or the police union for resolution.

I draw to the conclusion that a third-party intervention is Hunter's only viable option here. He could obviously get confrontational and fight back but, let us not forget that the captain is his superior. The chain of command in this quasi-military organization is highly rigid."
