CASE-THE STRESSED-OUT NONPROFIT Having walked in on the third employee in tears in the ladies' room, Lauren knew something was seriously wrong in her nonprofit organization. Because the organization provided care to individuals struggling with chronic and often deadly illnesses, it was not for the faint of heart. However, something had changed. Lauren has witnessed a growing number of absences, employees snapping at each other, and employees visibly struggling with the toll of the work. In addition, she noticed some of her employees were eating poorly, employees were going across the street from the building to smoke (since the building was smoke free), and several employees seemed to be making Friday Happy Hour a vigorous endeavor. As the associate director and manager in charge of human resources, Lauren wanted to put together a plan to take to the executive director and the board of directors. While she did not want to take on the role of fun police (some Friday camaraderie and occasional French fries are not a bad thing), all the reading she had been doing on self-care and stress in the workplace told her that the nonprofit was simmering and moving closer to a boil.
