Question:
I work for the Tennessee Department of Transportation. I think that the culture around here has a lot to do with creating good customer service, safety, diversity, and education. This has broad implications for each of these four mentioned. I think that it really applies to both ethics and values together. Customer service is one of the first things you are taught when coming aboard. We are to attend classes where we learn on how to deal with the public sector establishing relationships based on trust and honesty. Safety is instilled in everything we do to ensure that we not only do the best we can to provide safe roads and travel but to ensure the safety of one another on our teams, which also builds trust in a job that is very dangerous. Lately, Diversity has been a lot of what the culture has brought to us with tutorials on TITLE VII, newsletters that highlight minorities, and classes such as, "Diversities Count." Education plays a big role in the changes that are currently being made within the organization because they want to retain top talent and also create a culture where people are more towards building a career path instead of the ideology of this being a job.
I think that HR has used integrity and honesty as a central focal point for ethical behavior. When it comes to the values that they have implemented, I believe that they center it around empowerment. A lot of what the culture is with my organization has gravitated towards being self-sufficient. It has allowed me to focus on the choice of what career path I want to work towards and how I choose to excel in it. The organization bases its pay on performance and even has helped some get higher percentages for outstanding, exemplary service. For example, we recently had an employee assist a situation where a Tennessee Highway Patrol officer was being assaulted and he was able to respond to help the officer. Another instance was when one of our operations Technicians helped pull a woman from a burning car and saved her life despite the very serious burns she received from the accident. We are trained to respond to accidents and taught through the culture that is instilled to make decisions that involve the overall good and safety of others, as well as our coworkers. I feel like these examples demonstrate the ethical side of our organization. I think the values are demonstrated by creating value of the employees by empowering us to choose our career paths and having accountability for our choices. I am experiencing both ethical behavior and values because I am beginning to make progress in the advancement of moving to higher positions by displaying the things we are taught from the culture. It has created a very positive atmosphere within the organization, and I am experiencing more motivation from my coworkers, as well as myself.
