In ArcGIS why does the Sum_POP2000 column contain negative numbers? Some of the fields show -99999. Someone answered that this happened because -99999 no data flags messed up the results, but I don't understand this answer. What is a data flag, why do some fields have it and not others, and why do data flags mess up the results? This issue came up when I was joining an airport layer with a cities layer to find the number of cities that are closest to a particular airport.
