In responding, comment on the decision-making challenges that they encountered. What could they have done differently and/or more effectively?
A decision that I made that ended up not working out was when I was asked to do the assignments last minute at my previous job. Normally the team lead decided who would work in what unit at the start of our shift. In a hospital, things can happen at any time and there was an emergency at shift change so I was asked to make the schedule because I knew everyone well and how they worked. I was originally starting to use the intuitive decision-making model because I felt like I knew where everyone should be but then I decided to use the rational decision-making model. I changed the way I was making my decisions because one of my co-workers at the time decided to put their input in even though they werent supposed to. Step four in the decision-making process is generating alternatives which is what happened when I heard other opinions and changed what I originally wanted to do when I shouldnt have. While decision makers can get off track during any of these steps, research shows that limiting the search for alternatives in the fourth step can be the most challenging and lead to failure(Carpenter,2013).
Two decision-making challenges that led me to make a faulty decision are Framing Bias and Satisficing. Framing bias happened when I was influenced by opinions about what would happen or go wrong if I put certain people in certain units. It is important to be aware of this tendency because, depending on how a problem is presented, individuals choose an alternative that is disadvantageous simply because of how it is framed(Carpenter,2013). Satisficing happened because when I was stuck on making a decision, I listened to an alternative presented to me instead of going with what I originally wanted to do.Refers to a situation in which individuals select the first acceptable alternative instead of seeking the best possible decision(Carpenter,2013).
