In this assignment, you will use the Dirty Pools Case as you practice writing learning objectives/outcomes. Specifically, you will write learning outcome(s) to address an identified gap in how the lifeguards take and test water samples. As you work to respond to this request, be sure to refer to the key elements of properly written learning objectives/outcomes (specifically the ABCD model and Blooms Taxonomy).
Consider that there are two tasks: take and test water samples.
Here is the information about the case study, some relevent some not:
The lifeguard position was identified to be the most significant in ensuring the safety of patrons, not just from the water quality standards but also from the safety of the swimmers.
Environmental Context
The more significant and obvious environmental factors are (this is not an exhaustive list, you may have had other environmental factors that you considered):
Laws there is interest in establishing laws (bylaws at the municipal government level) requiring mandatory training for any employees with responsibility for pool maintenance and safety. The Alberta government is referenced in the case as having a Government-sanctioned training for pool operators demonstrating a commitment to publics safety with trained pool operators. If such laws are enacted, public agencies and private companies will be required to make commitments for training.
Social Climate societys concerns with the spread of disease have increased the expectations for government standards to protect their health and safety. In this case, the results of investigations brought light to some of the realities of pool, spa safety. This will put pressure on government for improved standards respecting employee competencies.
Lets look back to our lifeguard position again. It would be important to assess the environmental as well as the human aspects of any performance gap identified. Below are a few examples of performance deviations and potential reasons.
Water sample is only taken once per shift (not every hour)
Standard has not been clearly articulated and process is not clear.
Suggested solution:Improve resources for employees, training could be used, however it may not be sustained without written protocols and performance aids such as checklists or log sheets (examples of performance aids which will be covered in a subsequent lesson).
Improper analysis of water quality levels against regulations - resulting in errors
Employee does not have the skills to perform the analysis.
Suggested solution: Training to improve knowledge and skills. Supplement with performance aids (covered in a subsequent lesson).
Deviations in water quality are not reported.
Employee does not see the deviation as a concern.
Suggested solution: Training on standards, protocols, processes.
If the employee has already had the above mentioned training, and has adequately performed the task in the past, then training will not help as they would have the ability to perform. In this case, it is more likely an attitude concern and coaching/performance management strategies may be necessary.
