Initial Response

1. Identify five possible topics that you would like to explore for your persuasive speech using the enumerated list below that will help you identify your experiences and expertise that would be good starting points for a topic. Need a two paragraphs for each of the five you select.
2. For the first paragraph for each of the five that you select, you simply start with these statements. For instance, "A legal rule or social norm I disagree with is" and then you elaborate on this with a couple of sentences explaining what that rule is and why you disagree with it.
   • One cause I'm actively involved in is ....
   • Three recent current events that have had a big impact on me are .....
   • A controversial issue that people in my culture of origin deal with is ....
   • One of the political issues that energizes me a great deal is .... (You might consider political positions you strongly favor or oppose.)
   • A legal rule or social norm I disagree with is...
   • The most important change that our society should make is.....
   • A serious injustice that ought to be challenged....
   • If I could pass a law, it would call for ....
   • A problem in our society that is important, but mostly overlooked is ...
3. For the second paragraph on each of the five topics from above that you selected, need  a paragraph explaining how you might develop this topic as a persuasive speech with one of the specific purposes for persuasion as a question of fact, value, policy or refutation. Use the concepts from Chapter Sixteen as you describe your aim in being persuasive with each of the five topics.
4. Note: This is for exploring topics to use for your individual persuasive speech. Each member of your group does his or her own unique speech topic; it is NOT a group speech.

Part 2: Discussion Participation

Give feedback to each of the members of your small group to offer your perspectives on their suggested topics. Your feedback might reflect your views on their topics in light of your interest in each proposed topic, your overall perspective of being in agreement or not with the thesis as proposed, and your recommendations about what kinds of arguments you think should be made to be persuasive for you.

Note: The aim of the feedback is not to engage in an argument or debate within the small group, but to help speakers know where you are coming from on the topic. It is OK to state your position insofar as it may differ from the speaker's.
