Instructions The critique paper requirement involves describing, interpreting, and evaluating a research article in terms of its design and execution, validity and reliability, and adherence to ethical guidelines. This paper may be done individually or by pair. In your paper, make sure to include concepts learned in class. I did not specify which concepts should be discussed under each section/part here (like what I did for your group practice critique) as I expect that you should already know that. One example, Part II asks about the IVs and DVs in the study. It goes without saying that that should also include the operational definition of the variables, etc. Or when evaluating the validity of the study, what elements should you include? Needless to say, it would be helpful to consult the book, the lecture slides, and the practice paper to make sure that you don't miss including any of the relevant concepts. Directions: , but don't feel like you're stuck with the article about your major (e.g., if you're majoring in student affairs, but want to choose the article on rehabilitation, feel free to do that). Note how I didn't include the whole title of each article as the file name as I'd like for you to at least browse through all the articles before selecting one. Not all articles are created equal, and some may be easier to write a critique on than others. In your critique, write about the following: Part I: Summary of the article (1-2 sentences per bullet) Aim/Purpose of research (The goal of this research is to XYZ...) Background/rationale (Why the authors felt the research was necessary) Method Results Conclusion NOTE: Please help yourself understand the entire article by not simply copying-pasting/rewording the abstract. Yes, the abstract is the summary of the article, but you're better off reading the article and dissecting it to create a good summary. If you're able to provide a good summary of the article, then that must mean you have understood the article well. Part II. Describe the design, variables (IV's, DV's) and hypotheses of the study. Part III. Describe and evaluate the validity and reliability of the study (e.g., If you think the study has good external validity, support your answer by including concepts learned in class. The important part here is how well you can support your argument about the research's validity and reliability.). Part IV. Evaluate the accuracy and impact of the conclusion and implications (e.g., Are they meaningful? Do they make sense? Is it clear how they arrived at that conclusion from their findings or was the conclusion a little far-fetched? Etc.)? Part V. Discuss any ethical concerns relevant to the study, including those that the authors mentioned and did not mention. Part VI. Provide suggestions for improvement and direction for future research (some articles did include these pieces, but again, think critically and add more to what has been written). Part VII. Evaluate the quality and clarity of the article. (e.g., Was it easy to read? Which sections were difficult to understand? What could've made it better? Etc.)
