Lesson 5: Employee Relations
You may be asking yourself: aren't employees the focus of my organization's human resources (HR) department? Yes and no. HR has a lot of responsibility for employees and their actions. If you work in PR, however, you will likely be responsible for handling external (e.g., customers) and internal (e.g., employees) communications, meaning that you will have a say in the type of communications environment within your organization.
This leads me to one of the most important lessons you will learn in this class: you should do everything you can to create and maintain an environment of open communication within your organization.
How do you do this? Provide communication channels for employees, such as newsletters, social media channels, and especially avenues to voice complaints or problems.
Why do you do this? Many times, it is the frontline, lower-level employee who first becomes aware of a problem; if that employee has no way to communicate the problem or does not feel comfortable communicating the problem - to management, then your organization will miss an opportunity to catch a problem/crisis early on.
