Question:
Make an evaluation report on the youth pilot service program outlined below.
The proposed service program is aimed at youth in the Latrobe Valley, particularly in the Moe area.
The program will be called "The DropZone," and it will be a safe environment for young people of Moe to come after school and communicate with youth leaders and other young people within the community.
The program is aimed at young people from the ages of 10 to 16 and will run for 2 days per week at the moment on a Tuesday and Thursday of school terms.
There will be fun, engaging and different activities to keep the young people entertained such as pool tables, air hockey, table tennis, card games, educational and creative workshops, art spaces quiet areas, mentoring from the staff and the volunteer team leaders, homework help, and just a safe place to hang out meet new friends and to chill.
The objective of this program is a 12-month program which will be run 2 days per week during school terms to enable the young people of Moe a place to have something to do in a safe and well-maintained environment and engage with members of their community and other people their own age. The Dropzone program intends to be an open and accessible and safe space for all young people, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and ability. It is imperative that the program does not feel like a office or government building or facade. The program space needs to be a warm and inviting environment that will attract the young people and make it a place where the young people want to go.
The purpose of this is to give back into the community with a safe accepting, social environment where young people can come and hang out without judgement or agenda. The area is set up with activities such as table tennis, pool table, card games, music, art space, quiet zone and tables where help will be available for homework. We will provide basic snacks and drinks at no cost.
The stakeholders that will be considered for this program will be volunteer based fully trained male and female supervisors with working with children certificates. External stake holders will be the Latrobe City Council, local schools, local church services, local supermarkets for food donations and community support, Latrobe Community Health services, Department of Education and Training, Gippsland Primary Health Network, Youth Support and Advocacy Service, Centre for Multicultural Youth.
The benefits of including these clients when planning the service program is to give the young people a say of what they would like included in the program. The program will be set up in a vacant building in the CBD of the town of Moe and is accessible by 3 local surrounding schools. The program will initially run 2 days per week during school terms in between the hours of 3pm and 5:30 pm.
Based on community involvement and client demand will all depend if the program can extend its days and hours to incorporate a school holiday program.
To create a safe environment for the youth of Moe to go to, to hang out, meet new friends, try new activites and to receive mentoring and home work help from the team leaders. The Dropzone program needs to be an open and accessible and safe space for all young people, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and ability.
Consumer preferences were identified by asking the young people of Moe what they would like via surveys and a youth community meeting held in a park. Latrobe City Council asked the youth what mattered to them and what they would like to see within their community for them.
Some barriers could be that the Program could clash with different sports training in the area, transport issues could be a problem by getting to and from the program during the time scheduled, and the broad age group may clash with each other- some activities may not suit the younger youth and some activities may not suit the older youth.
These barriers could be addressed by working with sporting and other organisations to work around trainig days so they do not clash, making sure the location of the program is easily accessable via public transport and private vehicle and within walking distance to the CBD of Moe, and having different activites on the same night to cater for the different age groups attending.
By making sure the program has engaging and relevant activities for the youth, feedback would be by regular surveys and general face to face discussions to to see if the program fits the needs of the youth and to see if there are any identifiable gaps or if there could be any positive changes to be made to the program to support the needs of the youth to make them more engaging and enjoyable for all.
