Mini case Distribution and Service
Switch To Light Mode
Gina Martinez, RD is beginning to think that progress is being made in her department at Sky View Unified School District. As the menus have begun to change over the past few months she's noted an increase in participation at the elementary sites; its up and trending up each month. However, participation rates at the Jr high and high schools have not improved which is worrying.
She has been observing the way the lines are set up at each Jr high. She noticed significant congestion, which prevents the students at the end of the line from getting their food in plenty of time to eat before they have to go to class. Students have lines to choose from, of the lines serve the special of the day along with hamburgers, cheeseburgers, slices of pizza and premade cold sandwiches. The other lines have salads and build your own sandwiches that take a bit of time to make for each student. These lines are popular, as the students like that they can customize their sandwich and get exactly what they want.
After lunch service, Gina returns to her office to work on a plan for improving the wait time at the Jr high sites and her phone rings. Her boss, Jim Jones, calls to set up a meeting for tomorrow morning. Jim states 'I've just met with the superintendent and she plans to attend tomorrow nights board meeting to propose that the time for recess be extended by minutes and all recess will be scheduled for after lunch service." Jim explains that since the school day can't be extended by minutes to compensate for the increased time requested, the time must be cut from the current lunch service time; going from minutes to minutes. Jim tells Gina he wants a report from her by tomorrow mornings meeting on how her department can make this happen.
TASK: Answer the following questions in formal report that would be provided to Jim Jones at the morning meeting.
Is there a relationship in school food programs between waiting in line, participation and food waste? Explain
What can be done to improve service time at the Jr high sites in order to provide the same meal service in less minutes?
