The mini case

John Carty has started his own business in 2010, he has opened a small restaurant and coffee shop named Chez John. His business was a success, its location in downtown next to companies and universities, has contributed to this success. John has decided by 2016 to expand his business. He has opened 4 new coffee shops. By, 2017, Johns business was facing serious challenges. Sales per store were stagnant or declining, and its growth rate and profitability were down. Starbucks, McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts were introducing lower priced but still high-grade meals and coffee. The level of turnover was high. Since last three months, 35 employees had left the company: 20 employees were laid off and 15 employees has resigned.

John Carty has a daughter Liza Carty, graduated from state University in June 2017, and after considering several jobs offers, she decided to go into business with her father. Liza has met her father to discuss about the situation of his business. She has arrived at the following conclusions:

  • John has expanded his business without performing strategic planning.
  • He was in a situation of a surplus of workers, since has had not performed a strategic human resource planning, so he has decided to lay off 20 employees
  • Employees who stayed in the organization become demotivated. Those who have decided to resign were also demotivated and were always complaining that their work is repetitive and tedious.
