Symmetric encryption uses the same key to both encrypt and decrypt information. A benefit of this type of encryption is its speed to process and its privacy which makes it perfect for financial transactions. To protect payment and personal identifiable information, the same key can be used by the customer and the financial institute.

Asymmetric encryption uses both a public key, and a private key for encryption and decryption. This ensures that many different users are able to send encrypted data and only the recipient is able to decrypt the information. An appropriate application for this encryption method is an ecommerce business. Customers can be assured that their account information can only be decrypted by the business they're purchasing from.
