It is easy to say one structure is better than another, but the right answer really depends on how the company operates. The biggest difference between the two structures comes in how the management team operates within the company. Tall organizations, typically include more middle management and are better suited for larger organizations. Tall organizations tend to be more centralized in their operations, providing the advantage of effective coordination and communication of the business goals and missions. This effectiveness also helps the organization execute strategies in a more structured way. This is due to tall organizations typically belonging to more stable and predictable environments. While this structure was well suited in the past, the pace of the modern business world is quickly making the tall organizations obsolete. The obsolete is mainly due to the nimbleness of flat organizations. The flat structure leads to a more decentralized decision-making process, helping distribute authority to more individuals within the organization. Not only does this distribution help increase satisfaction and motivate lower-level employees, especially millennials, the fewer managers also helps lower the administrative costs. Not to say a flat organization is a perfect solution to all organizations. As will all company structures, there is no one size fits all. As we learned in previous chapters, the decentralized structure also lends itself to mistakes by less experienced employees, not to mention a lower level of accountability due to the distributed decisions making process.
