Objective: To explore how the pigments (dyes) in different inks can be separated based on their different polarities using paper chromatography. Discussion: Chromatography is used to separate mixtures of substances into their components. All forms of chromatography work on the same principle. They all have a stationary phase (a solid, or a liquid supported on a solid) and a mobile phase (a liquid or a gas). The mobile phase flows through the stationary phase and carries the components of the mixture with it. Different components travel at different rates. In paper chromatography, the stationary phase is a very uniform absorbent paper. The mobile phase is a suitable liquid solvent or mixture of solvents. For our experiment, the stationary phase is the paper and mobile phase will be our solvent (either water or rubbing alcohol). When a sample (for us, a spot or line of ink) is placed on the stationary phase (paper), the components of the ink may or may not have attractions for the paper. As the chromatogram is developed (this is when the mobile phase is allowed to flow up the paper (or stationary phase), components of the mixture will have competing attractions. If the component is more attracted to the mobile phase (solvent), it dissolve into the mobile phase and move up the stationary phase as quickly as the mobile phase (solvent) does. If the component is more attracted to the paper (stationary phase) than the mobile phase (solvent), it will move slower (if at all). The strength of the intermolecular forces between the component and paper (stationary phase) versus the strength of the intermolecular forces between the component and the solvent (mobile phase) determines how quickly and how far the component will travel as the chromato gram is developed. In this experiment, you will separate the components of three different water-based colored markers or different colored ball-point pens. The stationary phase will be paper (either white coffee lter paper or white paper towels) and the mobile phase (solvent) will be water if you use water-based markers and will be rubbing alcohol if you use ball-point pens.
