On October 25, 2017, Amazon announced their new Amazon Key service. The thumbnail view of the service is as follows: Amazon customers with the right equipment installed can opt into allowing delivery personnel to deposit packages inside their home, rather than leaving them outside. To enable this, the customer must own Amazon's Cloud Cam security cameras, and a smart lock from a suitable manufacturer. The camera must be configured to watch the entry way to their home, and both camera and smart lock must be accessible to Amazon's systems. (The camera is used to communicate with the lock, so Amazon does not need direct access to the lock itself.) The customer must also opt into "in-home delivery" for an order, it is not automatic. On delivery day, Amazon will provide the customer with an estimate of delivery time. When the package carrier arrives, they knock on the door lest the customer be home. Assuming the custoer is not home, the package carrier uses an app to contact Amazon, which switches on the camera and unlocks the door. The package carrier then deposits the package in the entry way, closes the door, and uses Amazon's app to signal that the door should be locked. (The door does not relock automatically.)
