One Friday evening, when Helland was drunk at a restaurant, he was refused further services. Also, he was asked to leave the restaurant. When Helland was leaving the restaurant with his girlfriend, a woman made some offensive remarks about them. There was an argument between them; the restaurant owner called restaurant bouncers to intervene and eject Helland. In the process of removing Helland, the bouncers, Douglas and Caragate, struck him a couple of times, and Helland fell down onto the concrete sidewalk and was seriously injured. Helland was not able to return to work after injury.
