Question:
One of the most critical aspects of the healthcare industry is effective communication. The urge for clear andefficient communication is constantly present in the healthcareindustry, whether it be a clinic properly communicating patient information with another clinic or a group of physicians, nurses, specialists, and other hospital employees discussing how to manage existing and incoming patients. Studies have shown that effective communication promotes treatment compliance and self-management and encourages patients and their families to engage as full participants in their care (Cipher Health, 2022).
I propose creating a performance improvement plan that contains the following components to address the issue of communication in the healthcare field; (1) create standard communication protocols for all the healthcare practitioners to guarantee clear, timely, and effective communication. This ensures that critical information is presented clearly and concisely, avoiding confusion. (2) Healthcare employee education, train staff on effective communication skills such as active listening, engage in two-way communication, and utilize simple plain language, which will help healthcare staff, patients, and their family members to communicate more effectively. (3) Employ technology to improve communication and cooperation among healthcare staff such as electronic health record, patient portal, secure messaging, and telehealth. This will guarantee that date is easily accessed and shared across various medical settings. And (4) Establish a feedback and assessment process to measure the efficacy of standard communication protocols and skills training. This will aid in the identification of deficiencies and will guarantee that communication stays a top focus.
These strategies will address the essential communication quality standard, which is an important component of The Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Objectives. The strategy will concentrate on strengthening communication among healthcare professionals, patients, and their families in order to guarantee that information is given properly, and patient care is administered safely and efficiently.
The following types of data will reflect a quality outcome: (1) Surveys, assessing patient satisfaction using surveys can demonstrate if communication improvement strategies are working and are achieving the patient's expectations and needs. (2) Assessing the quantityof medical errors, especially those caused by ineffective communication, will demonstrate the proposal's efficacy in decreasing errors and enhancing patient safety. And (3) Feedback from employees, collecting feedback on the efficacy of the communication strategy from medical providers may assist identify potential weaknesses and areas that need improvementand guarantee that the plan is serving the requirements of healthcare professionals (Schnipper, et al., 2021).
How will this implementation plan be communicated among departments? How will the data be displayed and shared with the organization? If the plan for this initiative was implemented in real life, what do you believe would be the hypothetical effect(s) on patient care outcomes? How will health information systems support those improvements in patient care? What do you think the hypothetical effect of the quality or performance plan would be on the culture of safety within the organization?
