Of 2,800 people who had received radiation therapy in childhood thyroid cancer developed in 28 people and benign thyroid tumors developed in 50. A comparison group consisted of 5,000 people who did not receive radiation therapy as children. One person from the comparison group (no radiation therapy) developed thyroid cancer during follow-up period, and only 5 developed benign thyroid tumors.
