You are the director of human resources for Acme Manufacturing. Your company, like other average companies, covers 80% of the cost of health insurance for all 200 employees in your company. The employees pay the other 20%.

Since 2019, your company has experienced a significant increase in health insurance premiums to cover your employees. Your company is exploring ways to cut the premium costs and found that if your company partnered with a local gym and encouraged employees to join, your company would save up to 15% from the insurance company, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. The more employees who join, the more money is saved by your company. This offer for discounted premiums expires April 1 when your company must renew its contract with Anthem, so now is the time to encourage your employees to join.

It will cost $20 for each employee to join the local gym and your company is willing to pay $15 of that cost. For families who are covered under the employees health insurance policy, they can join as well. According to insurance companies, the more obese your employees are, the more likely they are to go to the doctor for illnesses and are more likely to develop diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. They also need more medications. This all leads to higher health insurance premiums for Acme as well as higher out-of-pocket costs for Acme employees.

In an effort to help the company cut health insurance premium costs and promote healthy living styles for your employees, your company needs to persuade as many employees as possible to join the local gym. Healthy employees means higher productivity and less cost to the company.
