Peter is on his way to class and doesn't really enjoy it very much and would rather go out to lunch with his friends; however, Peter goes to class anyway. If the purpose of life is to get as much utility as possible in life given our scarce resources, then how can we explain Peter's decision to go to class from an economic perspective? Peter is forgoing the hedonic-type utility he could get right now and investing in human capital enhancing activities (getting an education) because it will have a bigger eudemonic-type utility payoff in the future. The elephant part of Peter's brain is more powerful than the rider part of his brain, so this explains why he has the economic drive to go to class rather than have lunch with his friends.
