1. Clemson is home to some pretty famous ice cream. Imagine you are part of CI

project that is developing phase diagram of ice cream to help inform the college

how to make the ice cream even more delicious.

(A) What are the components (roughly) of the system that you need to

consider?

(B) Consider a simplified version of the system, where you describe it using

a binary phase diagram. What are the axes of your phase diagram?

What units would you use? What range would you consider?

(C) What is the other variable that is needed to specify the phase of the

cream that you are choosing to hold constant in your phase diagram? If

the ice cream is made at Clemson, why can you reasonably hold this

constant?

(D) What are the different phases that you expect? Besides the obvious two

main phases that this system has, the cream system has multiple

complex phases like we discussed in class. Discuss one way that

multiple solid phases could exist. What distinguishes different phases?

(E) Pick a pair of phases and discuss a way to process the cream system

differently to access different phases. Does the phase diagram contain

information about transitioning between phases? Explain.
