Please answer as quickly as possible
Explain your reasoning and Formulate your answers to demonstrate understanding of course concepts and answer the question that is asked! If the answer is numerical, to get credit you must show your work and use units. If the question asks you to estimate a quantity, you must provide explanation of all the
numbers that you use. The estimating of intermediate quantities is part of the exercise.
3. A researcher found a way to levitate positively and negatively charged spherical
particles. Each sphere can be thought of as a model ion. When the spheres
levitate, small clusters spontaneously form.
(A) The small clusters of particles form and dissociate. When they are above a
certain number of particles, they keep adding particles. If we think of this as a
model crystalline material, what is this small cluster of particles called? Why
does it suddenly grow after reaching a certain size?
(B) We can think of a large enough cluster of these spherical particles as forming
a model material. Is a crystal formed from these particles a better model of a
metal or ceramic material? Explain.
(C) How would you need to change this experiment to simulate the other (metal
or ceramic) type of crystal?
(D) Based on your reasoning in (B), if you have an excess of large, negatively
charged spheres with diameter 2 mm, how many spheres would you expect
to cluster around a small, positively charged sphere of diameter 750 micrometers?
(E) What is geometry that you would expect the particles to form if the positively
charged sphere were only 100 micrometers?
