1. You are hiking and find some curiously round rocks that look like they might be

geodes. Breaking them open reveals a hollow stone with crystals protruding from

the interior perimeter. Fascinated, you open a few more from a nearby area and

notice that although the crystals have similar appearance (shapes and colors), the

crystal size varies significantly between the geodes.

(A) Based on what we have covered in class, discuss why the crystal size could

vary between the geodes, while the structure and composition remain the same.

B) What type of crystal nucleation is this an example of? How does the geode

crystal nucleation compare with that of rock candy?

(C) Within a geode, one of the crystals has a different color, but the same shape

as the other crystals. If the general crystal structure is the same, discuss a

plausible microscopic explanation for why optical properties might be different in the geode crystals.
