CASE STUDY - PART A Back in 2013, Marissa Mayer, who had recently become CEO of Yahoo, announced a decision to end telecommuting at the struggling internet-search company. She had learned that many of Yahoo's employees were not logged onto Yahoo's systems when they were supposed to be working. Her decision was very surprising because telecommuting is very prevalent in high-tech industries, and particularly in Silicon Valley in California where Yahoo is located. Many people wondered how Yahoo would be able to attract and retain talent with this change. On March 11th, 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Since this announcement, working from home (WFH) or telecommuting has become a necessary measure to mitigate the potential transmission of COVID-19. Millions of Canadians have had the way they live, work, and interact with their communities suddenly and significantly change. So far during the pandemic, a peak of 5.4 million Canadians have been in a WFH arrangement. Organizations are planning for the pandemic to be more fully controlled, and eventually to allow for more people to gather. As a member of the Human Resources Management team for ABC Company, you are being asked to give your recommendation about having people back in the office working on site, or to continue to allow telecommuting when the pandemic comes to an end. Your offices are currently sitting empty.
