Soak up the sun was written by Sheryl Crow and Jeff Trott. Trott had been on a five-hour flight to New York when he came up with the concept of the song and had the majority of the song wrote before he presented it to Crow. When Trott presented the rough draft of the song to Crow the conversation about the recent Columbine shootings were brought up into conversation, the pair decided to convey a message into the song in regards to the recent high school shootings. Crow herself had admitted that many of her high school friends were outcasts in some ways. The song was released on March 25th 2002. I was never a fan of this song and normally I would turn it if I were to hear it on the radio. I truly enjoyed looking into this piece as there is such a good message to the song that I would have never appreciated. One of my favorite verses in this song is it's not wanting what you want its wanting what youve got I think that often times in today's society it's easy to lose sight of what really matters in life and it's easy to get caught up in feeling the need to have the best materialistic items. It is acceptable to have goals in life but you should never lose sight of what's truly important. As the song went on the writers talk about a friend saying I'm looking up, you're looking down I believe the writers are telling us that there will always be toxic people who are not uplifting and positive in your life, we need to try our best not to give in to that negativity. As stated in the lyrics I'm the one who has the key we all hold the key to our own happiness.
