Although many new automotive apprentice technicians come with some basic mechanical skills, they often lack the precision and attention to detail to be most efficient. These skills can be learned and taught through on-the-job training; however, they take a great deal of time and involve losing the effectiveness of two employees rather than one. Getting these technicians to learn and use a standardized method of an initial inspection as quickly as possible needs to be the operations level managements top priority as each minute lost is money wasted. In addition to the cost of the technicians hourly rate, management looses potential income if they are unable to quickly service the customers vehicles and get more cars into the garage. A one-week course with real world equipment has been shown to quickly get the apprentice to be able to complete the basic level tasks (initial inspection, oil change, tire rotations) using a uniform process which keeps the tasks at or below the book rate of time. A two-day seminar on alignments allows the technicians to gain additional skills to allow our entry level tech to complete free alignment work (warranty and inspection) while our senior techs (with higher salaries) are free to complete more complex paid work.
