Project Management - MGMT 2012 FALL Assignment 3 - Project Management in the Movies 2021 Critically Analyze a Movie from a Project Management Perspective The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate your understanding and ability to identify project management concepts as discussed in class. To make this fun, you will be asked to watch a movie and evaluate the areas of project management as they were applied in the plot and characters in the film. This assignment is to be completed in groups, consisting of no more than 4 members. The Assignment 1. Choose one of these three movies to watch and analyze it from a Project Management point of view; Saving Private Ryan (1998), Moneyball (2011) or The Martian (2015). 2. Select five of the project management concepts listed below and discuss with examples, how they relate to the characters and projects in your chosen movie. Movie Backgrounds Saving Private Ryan (1998) - A mother of four soldiers, Mrs. Ryan, is about to receive three telegrams on the same day, notifying her of three fallen sons. In effort to alleviate her grief, the US Army decides to send out 8 men to retrieve her fourth son and bring him home. Moneybail (2011) Oakland A's GM is handicapped with the lowest salary constraint in baseball and must find a competitive advantage for his team to be successful. He is about to turn baseball on its ear when he uses statistical data to analyze and place value on the players he picks for the team. The Martian (2015) - An astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Note that while the movies may not be 100% accurate/realistic regarding the details and possibilities, please use them as factual for our learning purposes. Grading for each of the five knowledge areas 1. Describe what the characters did to demonstrate the project management concepts (be specific). Use headers to separate the five knowledge areas. WORK BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE identify all tasks that need to be completed for the project to be successful and discuss the timing, sequencing and dependency of each. 4. RESOURCES MANAGEMENT (TIME AND MATERIALS) where and how were materials procured? Identify restraints on materials. What was the time available to complete this project and identify events that affected timing. 5. TASK RESPONSIBILITY MATRIX - for all major tasks, identify who was responsible for their completion, who was responsible for supporting. Identify also any conflicts and how they were addressed 6. COMMUNICATION PLAN - identify who needed to know what information, with what frequency and what method of communication was used. Identify ant challenges in the communication plan. 7. MANAGING EFFECTIVE PROJECT TEAMS - there is a clear hierarchy in the movies, but the projects required more than just a series of orders. Describe the techniques used to build an effective project team and discuss (good or bad) how successful they were 8. PROGRESS AND PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT - what is the definition of success for this project? As it progressed through its various tasks and stages, how was performance measured. RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN- an integral part of any project since things almost never go as planned. What risks were involved in this project? What was the likelihood of them occurring? Evaluate team and individual performances. What resources were released. In the final evaluation of the project - was it a success or not? Can the learnings be transferred to future projects?
