What is your business case for pursuing your MBA? Are there opportunities within the MBA program, or higher education in general, for innovation? If not, what about in an industry you are interested in pursuing? How can you help facilitate this innovation or make it a reality?

My business case for pursuing an MBA started with a desire to do more than what I was doing as a nurse at the bedside. I'm proud of the good I have done in that role. However, my goal is to have a larger impact on the healthcare provided in my area and hopefully provide a greater amount of good for an increased number of people in the form of improved quality of care and optimized health outcomes. I chose WVU's HMBA program because I felt that it would build well on my previous degrees (BA Political Science/BSN) and because I am generally interested in business and believe an MBA will give me the skills and tools necessary to be an effective healthcare leader. Furthermore, I think it's essential that we have leaders in healthcare that understand both sides of the equation, meaning the clinical and business components of the healthcare industry. I would argue that well rounded healthcare leaders who understand the business and clinical parts of the industry are more capable of innovating and implementing effective yet fiscally responsible interventions capable of improving quality of care and health outcomes while also protecting the bottom line. The fact of the matter is that we need innovative leadership in healthcare especially given all the headwinds we are facing (staffing and provider shortages, growing demand, increased regulation, increasing costs, aging and inadequate infrastructure, etc.). My goal is to take my clinical experience and the education I have gained from this program and use it to continue progressing upward in my organization and become an innovative and effective healthcare leader.
