I think that a room service server and a restaurant server definitely have different training, and those room service servers that are going to become a restaurant server will have to do many different tasks. Often times, room service may even be provided by the cook themself in smaller hotels and in larger hotels, there are dedicated positions for these things. As a room service server, the room service server sometimes collects the order over the phone and specify with the guest what they exactly want, any condiments, drinks, etc. Then when the food is ready, they bring the food to their room and open the trays for the guests to enjoy. Sometimes the cups are wrapped in plastic for safety while the food and beverage is traveling through the hotel. The room service servers will ensure that the guests have everything upon their arrival and if the guests needed anything else they would go get it and then let the guests enjoy their privacy. In a restaurant setting and to become a restaurant server, the server would checking in with guests at the table instead of just dropping the food off. The server would also refill drinks and ask if the guests enjoyed their experience. In a restaurant setting, it is imperative that there is constant communication with other servers and people because guests are waiting and you want to be able to tell them where you are at or if you are putting in an order for the guests and they have specifications, those need to be communicated. With room servers, this is communicated over the phone, so whoever answers the phone only has to sound polite. As a restaurant server, you have to be formal with guests, kind, and respectful. You should always make sure that you are formal, kind, and respectful, but since the guests are unable to see you through the phone, it is important that the server sounds polite and is respectful over the phone and not only with their voice. Restaurant servers have to be aware of their appearance and how they deliver food. These servers also clean tables and chairs and you would have to approach the table and greet your guests while introducing yourself and give the table menus. You can also ask if they would like any drinks at this time. The server will retrieve the drinks and bring them to the table and then take the tables order. During this time, the server has to ask plenty of questions to ensure the guest will be satisfied with their meal. For instance, if they ordered a burger, you may ask them if they want the pickle on the side, or if they would like to choose another option that is offered such as chips. The server should let the guests lead the conversation, and they should repeat the orders. After the guests have placed their orders, the server can collect the menus. Before food is served, servers should come around periodically to remove any items that are not needed, and to ask if the table needs anything, or even to pour more water. The server can then serve the meals and ensure that they are paying attention to detail and ask questions if guests need refills or such. These are very different from each other.
