- What legal union avoidance strategies do you believe would be most effective for Bon Appetit?
- What union strategies do you believe would be most effective for attempting to unionize in this particular situation?
Some avoidance strategies that I would use for Bon Appetit are to address the employees. Sometimes simplicity is key when it comes to a business. By explaining to your employees why you don't think unionizing is a good idea for them, you may make more headway in getting through. Such as compensation and benefits. Be straight with them. If the union has told them that compensation and benefits is going to increase by unionizing, you should let them know that it is all 'negotiable' and that the union cannot guarantee instant increases. Or you could let them know that any issues that they may have with the company or a policy will then have to go through a grievance process that can be lengthy. Let them know about the monthly dues that they will have to pay as well as other fees and assessments if they are applicable. Explain the current policies that are in place and open the floor up for a discussion. Ways that they can be made better, but don't make false promises. More than just stating facts, let them know that you do not believe that they need a third party represenatative, because that is what they will get. All of their issues, grievances, compaints or worries about the company will have to go through their representative and there really is no telling how long they will get back to you. Make sure that your employees are aware of your open door policy and that you are willing to discuss any concerns that they may have. One way that I believe you can effective in unionizing your employees is to do the same as above... talk with them. At one of my previous employers, they would have a union representative available during orientation or meetings where they would address the group. He/she would give their insight into why unionizing is important, the changes that they have seen as well as the downfalls. By weighing options it doesn't feel like your 'pushing' your employees to unionize. Instead, you are showing them honesty and giving them the respect that they so deserve. Another option (or one to utilize along with the sit down) is to utilize the bulletin boards in every breakroom. Strategically placed flyers will bring the idea into the subconscious, even if the person is not consciously searching for the flyer, they will see it and it may be in the back of their mind.
