Unions are controversial for several reasons. Historically, unionization and the labor movement has been tied to communism, which can understandibly spook management and the general public, and cause them to have a negative view of unions. There is also a history of violence tied to unionization, on the part of management trying to avoid unionization and strikes as well as on the part of unions leadership trying to strong-arm workers to join their ranks. Less dramatically, unions can be controversial simply because they hinder managements ability to run their organization as they see fit.

A clear advantage of unions in the workplace for workers is enhanced benefits, salaries, and working conditions. A disadvantage of unions for workers can be seen in a 'closed shop' environment, where all workers are expected to join and pay dues, regardless of their interest. An obvious disadvantage of unionization for management is that an element of control must be given up in order to satisfy the union's demands. These demands also genrally come at a financial cost, which would impact management's bottom line. However, unions could also provide management with an unexpected benefit: a more satisfied workforce, which could result in less turnover and, by extension, less money spent on recruitment, hiring, and training of new employees.
