Unions have been considered controversial because they have had their leadership start to lose focus on improving the lives of their employees. Instead, they are now focused on political stuff. Also, many times strikes in the past have created a negative stigma as far as outside opinions of the union as well. People also question the power the union has now from an outside perspective. When the press covers the actions of the union the story that is told will affect how the outside public opinions of the union. The cost from the company in response to actions by the union, as well as inconvenience caused by strikes by the union will also affect the view of the public. Advantages for the employees are higher wages and benefits. The company does have a negotiating benefit because they only have to negotiate in a group dynamic instead of individually. It can have the drawback of an issue with the fact that if they need to eliminate customers who have behavior issues that they will need to do additional documentation to eliminate employees who are not following company policy.
