Organizational culture

Every organization, department and team operate in an ecosystem with cultural reference and norms. Culture is created within a group and shares common experiences and habits and norms. Some of these behaviors are unique to the group and often establish how the group operates and exists. The culture of an organization can has a significant impact on the project management structure. The environment that projects operate in is likely to have positive and negative effects on the success of the projects. Project managers should assess the culture of the organization as the type of environment will affect different aspects of the project. In addition, the subculture of the various departments involved in the project and interactions with project will dictate how decisions are made and the completion of activities in the workstreams (Gary, 2018, p. 86).

Project Culture as a Collaborative Strategy

There is renewed focus on project culture to understand how the dynamics of culture affect the outcome projects reveal in some studies that the focus is on the cultural differences. Supporting project managers to navigate the cultural landscape provides members of the project team a strategic framework that involves collaborations using the subcultures that develop organically. A project culture aware management should support project managers in dealing with projects by leveraging the use of communication and coordinating to collaborate productively. It is important to develop a project culture which is conducive to achieving a successful project completion (Dieterich et al., 2022). Understanding the impact of culture on project management has the potential to increase efficiency and reduce the siloing effect that seems to plague project managers.

Project Management Structure and culture

Understanding the type of structure to be deployed will influence the cultural ecosystem of the organization. Managing the projects based on the structure of the organization will leverage the existing decision making, functional and operational channels. However, these channels are likely to have their own norms and ways of working that may conflict with the project management and the outcome of the project. Creating a dedicated project team with a new structure will minimize most of the cultural issues but time an effort will be needed to build trust and relationship that would have already existed using the functional organization.

Assessing the cultural environment and understanding the impact culture has on project management should build stronger cohesion within the project team and help mitigate some of the issues project managers face due to cultural differences.
