Replacing human workers with robots is not a new concept. Manufacturing and industrial firms have been doing this for quite some time. Every industry uses computers and programs now. However, robot workers are a fairly new concept in customer service and restaurant firms. Due to it being a new concept it can be difficult for firms to compare the wage rate and labor cost of human workers versus rental rate for hiring robots. There are many factors for management to consider such as repairs and maintenance costs of robots. In the end, renting robots can be more efficient. A high turnover rate and constantly retraining employees can be very costly to firms. A shortage of workers and unreliable workers are a big issue faced by many restaurant owners. If management utilized robots instead of human workers they eliminate the problem of scheduling issues, workers calling out sick, and unreliable workers. Robots are more predictable and efficient. Eventually it will be easier to specify its production function. Part 2: Some customers may be uncomfortable with robot workers and may view them as stealing jobs from humans. Some people may even refuse to go to restaurants with robot workers. Human workers will still be needed. Automating certain tasks will free them up to provide better customer service and have more time to focus on other duties. Monitoring performance and reliability will be easier for the robots. Robots are more predictable and will have a fixed level of output. It will be interesting to have a mix of labor and capital, but eventually management will be able to predict the production function, just as manufacturing and other industries have done. Also, while it may seem like utilizing robot workers is stealing jobs from humans, it is actually providing more jobs but in a different industry. Workers will be needed to create and design the robots, repair and maintain the robots, program the robots, monitor the robots etc. Businesses are constantly evolving and changing with the technology available
