Question: Please give one example illustrating the difference between equality and equity in the classroom explain why?
scenario 1:
Aside from English, the only other language I know is ASL. (Though I hope to start learning Spanish here very soon!) I'm deaf in one ear so it seemed like a great language for me to learn. However, I wasn't able to learn it until after I graduated college which made learning a new language difficult. Especially since the other students in my 'intro' class were mostly already fluent because their high schools offered ASL unlike my own. It was embarrassing to see how far behind I was compared to my classmates and there were quite a few times where I wanted to throw in the towel. Thankfully I didn't and while I knew I had to do double the work to catch up to them, I found little tricks to make it easier for me to learn. Signing what I was speaking was a real help. In fact I still catch myself signing things from time to time as it became a habit. Watching videos and doing my own personal 'homework' outside of what the teacher assigned helped out quite a bit as well. Quizzing myself was a help as well. Since you can't exactly have a written study guide for ASL, half the fun/struggle was finding a way to study which made it stick. Unfortunately I graduated then moved away before I could be considered 'completely fluent' and over the years I have forgotten some, but since I've started school I've been picking it back up. There are a ton of wonderful online classes and videos to help learn and the basics came back to me within a day so it's been great to pick this language back up!
scenario 2:
English is my second language, and Spanish is my first. When I was learning English, It was pretty hard to understand. I did not get better until middle school because I was forced to read every day for 30 minutes by a teacher who helped me a lot in my other classes and continued to help me through high school. I had no help at home since my parents did not know any English and had no school education, but they did want me to do good in school. They just couldnt help me. They really wanted, but they couldnt. I was left to figure things out on my own even school letters or notices would translate for my parents. It was hard not going to lie, having no help and being made to feel as if the langue you know was a bad thing; My elementary school did not like it when we spoke Spanish they would punish us nothing severe, just stuff like no recess, extra Homework, no fun projects, etc. So in my head school was no fun because of all of this. Another challenge was the slang or informal way of speaking English because when your taught English, they teach you formal English, making you sound very different from the others. This did not happen to me, but others had to deal with bullying, making some not want to learn anymore and hate school. Those are some of the things I remember, but learning another langue and having to deal with other life problems just makes it really hard to try in school or in anything when young, but when have support from the teachers and having parents that are attentive about school it a good chance you pass and maybe continue to collage.
