"A channel is a medium by which communication is made from the sender to its receiver (Daft, 2018, p. 276). When something is as serious as a companywide lay off I feel that needs to be done face to face. Looking at how the different channels work and their levels of richness, the only way to communicate something this serious is with a face to face conversation. For tasks, such as changes in company goals, the best avenue to communicate is the channel of using emailing or company messaging. This helps to ensure that the channel of communication is still strong but it is also showing a paper trail of who has gotten the notice. Something as simple as a read receipt on the email will show that the subordinates have gotten the message to then start working on their tasks.

For me, when I need to communicate nonverbally with my team, I select emails. It helps not only document that I have kept a paper trail of my communications, but it also helps me to see if I need to follow up, resend, or add additional people to the communication. Emails and text messages for quick items needed has been successful for me in my role as operations director over the past 4 years."
