She has noticed that even though John refuses to accept the mental illness, he can see that it exists. The narrators mental illness personified as the wallpaper affects John in other ways. She describes the yellow wallpaper as having a color that stains everything it touches, much in the same way that a persons mental illness would affect her loved ones. In fact, the yellow wallpaper also has a bad smell that permeates the entire house, making it difficult for anybody not to be affected by it. mThe yellow wallpaper continuously drives the woman insane, and she decides to sleep during the day and stay up overnight to gaze at it. In her imagination, she believes that the yellow wallpaper will come buzzing, and the arrangements of the wallpaper adjust and interchange. She then begins to imagine a woman changing the designs in the wallpaper and watching her. 'There is a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a broken neck and two bulbous eyes stare at you upside down (Perkins 3). She explains how the wallpaper is getting in her nerves day in, and through her imagination, she believes in the wallpaper there is a woman.
